Traditional Karate & Self Defence - Okinawan Goju Ryu

Developed by Chojun Miyagi, Goju Ryu is one of the 3 originating styles from Okinawa. The style focuses on practical self defense applications from short range situations utilizing close in escape, hold breaking and multi level striking techniques. Makes great use of elbow and knee attacking actions to disable and control an agressor.

The style also employs grasping and throwing techniques similar to Judo. body conditioning & strengthening regimes including the use of traditional strength training equipment. and breath control excercises aimed at developing Ki / Chi, or inner strength. The style is well recognized for developing robust individuals.

Traditional Japanese Sword Arts - Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu , Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido

Kenjutsu is an openly aggressive art of swordsmanship from a pre drawn sword and with an opponent generally identified well in advance. Practice employs the use of wooden training swords (Bokku-to)

Iaijutsu/Iaido is generally more defensive in nature, yet requires the draw and immediate despatch of an adversary when under threat. Iaijutsu can be used offensively to launch a surprise attack against an unsuspecting enemy. The practice of these arts is primarily through Kata (standard practice forms) in both solo and paired routines. Practice includes the use of practice swords - Iai-to, wooden swords - Bokku-to and Katana.

Traditional Japanese Staff & Sword Art - Shinto Muso Ryu Jodo

This Koryu or old tradition, was founded around the end of the 16th century by Muso Gonnosuke (Katsuyoshi), a swordsman of Katori Shinto Ryu and Jikishinkage Ryu. The syllabus includes a variety of weapons, Jo - staff/stick, Ken - swords, long & short, singly and together , Tanjo - walking stick, Jutte - truncheon, Tessen - iron war fan, and Kusarigama - sickle and chain. The techniques of SMR are influenced by sword, spear, and naginata (traditional samurai weaponry) in resopnse to an attacking swordsman.

 

Principles and Philosophies

Koryu (traditional styles)

Classical Japanese styles designated as Koryu are those specifically originating pre Meiji era (that is prior to 1868) and were also refered to as Bugei - War arts.

Bujutsu (martial arts)

Primarily the technical training and practical application of the methods of the classical warrior class (Bushi / Samurai).

Budo (martial ways)

Developments from Bujutsu systems in as much as the techniques are ostensibly the same. Budo is an esoteric practice with the goal of personal development.

Michi / Do (the way)

Refers to the path of life and philosophy that the individual persues through martial training, in the search for enlightenment. This journey is embraced through austere training, which develops personal humility, respect and tolerance.
