Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What is the difference between Rembuden Institute of Martial Arts and other martial arts schools?

Answer: At Rembuden Institute of Martial Arts, our arts are not “competition based sport styles” but are focused on practical self defence, self discipline and self development in both the body and spirit. Rembuden Institute of Martial Arts is a school dedicated to the preservation and teaching of Koryu Martial arts. The name translates as,

Rem – to train / training

Bu - martial / military

Den - institute or college

It means a place where one trains in the martial way & spirit of traditional Japanese warrior (Bushi / Samurai) arts and ways.

Question: What is Koryu?

Answer:

Ko – traditional / old

Ryu – style

This refers to arts and ways specifically originating during the feudal period of Japan and prior to 1867. These systems of training usually have the Japanese sword as the principle weapon of use, in attacking, and or defence against, or using a variety of other weapons, and unarmed techniques in response.

A major characteristic of schools of Koryu is their attention to lineage and the training method, which is dominated by Kata based syllabus.

Koryu schools also use a Menjo system of membership record and Menkyo system of licenses, as opposed to Dan / Kyu grading.

Question: What are the Benefits of training at Rembuden Institute of Martial Arts?

Answer: The training offered by Rembuden is conducted under the direct supervision of a teacher of over 37 years of experience, and training in Japan. He has links to authentic Japanese styles and affords these links directly to all students of Rembuden. This truly genuine link is becoming all the more rare with the proliferation of quasi traditions, and eclectic origins far removed from the true teachings and cultural values.

The comprehensive syllabus of Rembuden Institute of Martial Arts also enures that there is both variety of training opportunities and a well rounded training regime to develop one self both physically and mentally. We also provide a link to opportunities to explore other areas of Japanese culture, such as arts & crafts and language.

Question: How often should I practice/train at Rembuden?

Answer: It is recommended that at least twice per week should be the minimum commitment for both an improvement in fitness and retention of technical skills. The class schedules are sufficiently spread to enable regular attendance.
